English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) - Part of the UK Government’s Skills for Life initiative, this nationally accredited qualification is aimed at short and long term visitors to the UK who wish to access further education, vocational training or employment in the UK. The content of the qualification is based on the life skills contexts of connections and relationships, time and money, home and community, rights and responsibilities and personal development. These themes are covered within the assessments for Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening. EDI awards ESOL at Entry Level, Level 1 and Level 2.
The ESOL course is a course for adult speakers whose home language is not English, who are living or trying to settle in England.
Before starting the course the students are assessed to determine their level of English. Modules can be taken together or individually to improve on the command in particular fields of English language.
All modules serve the purpose of building up student’s confidence in dealing with everyday life situations as well as facilitate and increase the cultural awareness.
The programme relies on learning communicative English which is accomplished through the support from the classmate as well as tutor. The classroom student’s takes part in a variety of activities including discussion, role plays, pronunciation, conversation, listeing to CD’s watching videos and many more.
Students practice their language skills through pair work, group work or individual preparation. The topic that students improve include: asking for personal details and experiences daily life,work,education,hobbies, family & friends, weathers ,UK culture as well as communicative and situational topics e.g. agreeing and disagreeing,buying,ordering,posting,booking etc.
Having completed the ESOL course students receive the certificate confirming their accomplishment and improvement of the command in English language and can advance to the next level course.
